about

While on tour in France in 2009 , there were a few days off in Paris. Jamaaladeen decided to take advantage of this precious time they had and gathered a small ensemble in a recording studio he was surrounded by a stellar group of master improvisers and progressive musicians after all. Paris held a special place in Jamaaladeen’s heart since this was the very first city he lived in Europe when ORNETTE Coleman recruited to be in his band Prime Time. He was supposed to go for 2 weeks, but they stayed for 6 months. It was his first time in Europe and so much happened not only musically , but personally and spiritually as well. He would have long talks with the coinceirge at the hotel he was living at Hotel Le Prince , (the Coleman Home base while touring ) his name was Abdul Kahalek who was from Tunisia , they spoke about Islam. Jamaaladeen was known as Rudy and he was just beginning his spiritual path towards Islam his previous knowledge came from the Nation of Islam and the jazz musicians that had been part of that movement this introduction to Sunni Islam was important for him to fully understand his path.

When Jamaaladeen returned to Philadelphia 6 months later, he took his shahada ( the proclamation to become Muslim) . Since then Jamaaladeen had been returning to Paris on tours periodically and wanted to pay homage to this place that held so much importance to his life as a musician and as a human being. One more thing was on Jamaaladeen’s mind , The year was 2009 and Barak Obama had just been elected, he wanted to celebrate this milestone for African American’s that a black man and his beautiful family now resided in THE WHITEHOUSE. It seamed like America was finally becoming the great democracy we had dreamed of. He called on powerhouse saxophonist David Murray who was living in Paris at the time, David’s 20 year old son Guitarist Mingus Murray and Oakland Drummer Randell Merrit. Jamaaladeen gave some direction on the vibe and story he wanted to tell but wanted to spontaneous improvisations that captured the energy and explorations he experienced in his youth in Paris . Amiri Baraka was in town so Jamaaladeen asked him to recite a congratulatory poem for Baraka Obama becoming President of the Unites States of America. Who better to deliver this message to the world?
To top of this musical creative Jamaaladeen called on keyboard and electronic artist mastermind Pauli Urbanek living in Vienna. Jamaaladeen had been working with Pauli who had been developing a process he called “ Recomposing”. Jamaaladeen gave all the raw unmixed tracks to him with total freedom to “recomposes” which is combination if mixing, remixing and adding electronics and samples to an existing recorded composition. The result is a unique hybrid fusion of electronic and pure free jazz improvisation, a audio time travel that spans decades from the black arts movement poets, the genre barrier busting influence of the free jazz downtown loft music scene to the European electronica sound of the late 2000’s.
