about

2014 tour in Tokyo Japan
This trip was very special and a reunion with Japan for me, I had not been there for over 20 years and was excited to be back. I have a mission when I arrive in a new city, I try to walk around and explore it helps me in many ways, good for my health walking after long flights and train rides and it is good for my spirit to recharge and connect with the place I will be performing in. As usual when I arrived in Tokyo I was excited to hit the streets and see the shops and grab some food in one of the many incredible restaurants there. I found myself in Shibuya Scramble Crossing neighborhood in front of TSUTAYA a famous Japanese book store. I almost could not believe my ears when I heard this wonderful sound coming from a busking musician Hiroyuki Yokota , so I had stopped to listen, after I introduced myself and purchased a CD , he started to play “Times Square” . This was such a delight as it was clear he knew my history because he was playing a song composed by Ornette Coleman for Prime Time the band I spent 12 years with. Hiroyuki was combining electronics and Saxophone sounds in such a fresh and vibrant way, his youthful energy resonated with me, so I grabbed his contact info hoping to connect with him later during some time off between concerts.

The next day at the first concert , I found Seigen Ono was going to be the sound engineer for a live recording we were doing with Marc Robot. I had met him in NYC music scene in the 1990’s , he also worked with one of my musical hero’s Ryuichi Sakamoto . Seigen Ono also happened to have a recording studio in Tokyo. When I told him about my idea he graciously invited me to work out of his studio. When I contacted Hiroyuki he let me know part of a band called Ethnic Minority and they would be happy to come and play the recording session with me. All the pieces started to fall into place for a magical recording session . “Small World” is that session.
