In 1988 legendary vibraphonist Khan Jamal, electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and electronic drummer Dennis Alston formed the group “THE PHILLY CONNECTION” . Dennis had joined Ornette Colemans Prime Time as second drummer for two European Tours, during this time he and Jamaaladeen has an opportunity to bond musically after knowing each other since junior high school. The Philly Connection was only able to perform a few concerts in Philadelphia and New York. Out of that collaboration a session “THE LIBERATION OF SOUND” was recorded in Philadelphia. Since 1988 until now this recording has been archived within Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s unreleased material collection. We lost our brother Khan Jamal in Philadelphia in January of 2022 . This loss reminded Jamaaladeen that life on this earth is finite and he must continue to strive to get this precious music out into the world for all to enjoy and offer one more example of Khan Jamals musical genius. The music on this recording is a clear example of the explosive trajectory that the group was on with Khan, experimenting with sounds that freed their creativity. It was 1988 and they all had been experimenting with digital and electronic sounds in their respective disciplines. The contrast between the organic percussion of the vibraphone and mirimbas against the clean sharp electronic sounds, propulsive funky nature of the Steinberger bass reveal a afrofuturistic intent that can not be denied. Please enjoy this music as it was made with both love for their cultural history and excitement for the what the future holds.

    “Philly Connection
    The Philly Connection, Jazztrack, 27
Barrow Street, east of Seventh Avenue South (645-2387). As a bass player for Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, Jamaaladeen Tacuma turned finger-popping funk basslines into fast, exact, kinetic counterpoint. Leading his own groups, he has since experimented with dance music and world music. Now, he's looked back to his hometown and formed a trio with two fellow Philadelphians - Khan Jamal, an assertive young vibraphonist, and Dennis Alston, a drummer. If past recordings of Mr.
Tacuma and Mr. Jamal are any guide, the trio's New York debut ought to be a crossfire of tunes and rhythms”.- Jon Parales
